Case study

IT and WEEE destruction for a leading geotechnical engineering specialist

Drace Geocisa is a leading geotechnical engineering specialist founded in Spain in 1968. Specialising in deep foundations, ground treatment works, and ground engineering, Geocisa’s UK branch has been trusted to work on some of the transport sector’s key upgrades. This has included monitoring and ground treatment works for The Elizabeth Line, as well as Bank Station’s capacity upgrade, and the Thames Tideway Tunnel.

The challenge

Drace Geocisa provides all kinds of services, including water treatment, geotechnical works, precasting, infrastructure management, geotechnical and structural surveys, and geotechnical engineering. Due to the complex and varied nature of the services Geocisa UK provides, the company often has IT and WEEE (waste electronics and electronic equipment) waste that requires secure disposal. This could be because the equipment is outdated, broken, or no longer functional. Some of this equipment contains confidential information, and all WEEE is classed as hazardous waste and requires responsible, secure disposal. Because of this, Geocisa needed to find a provider where waste management was simple and could all be managed by one supplier. That’s where Shred Station stepped in.

Our approach

A key pillar of the Shred Station ethos is to provide a service to suit all customers. While we specialise in the secure destruction of traditional confidential materials like paper or hard drives, we also offer broader waste management solutions. This provision of services simplifies waste management for our customers and means they can have all of their waste managed through just one provider - us. As a result, our customers experience a seamless service for whatever waste they have. This includes WEEE waste and hazardous waste.

Across sites in North West London and South West London, Shred Station has collected all sorts of different WEEE waste and IT waste from Geocisa, such as:

  • Monitor screens

  • Laptops

  • Mobile phones

  • Server racks

  • Routers

  • Solar charge controllers

  • Flow meters

  • Radio modems

  • Temperature probes

  • Multiplexers

  • Dataloggers

  • Switches

  • Electrolevels

  • Video extenders

  • And comms interfaces.

Because we can manage all sorts of waste, collecting all of these materials wasn’t an issue, where it may have been for other suppliers inexperienced in non-traditional forms of confidential and electronic waste.

For the materials mentioned above, we provided off-site secure destruction and recycling services. Our security-vetted operatives collected the materials, transported them to our local depot in Harlow, Essex, and sorted them for processing. As well as ensuring the secure destruction of any confidential material, all recyclable elements are dealt with in authorised treatment facilities to ensure the most sustainable end solution. For example, with WEEE waste, often metals can be melted down at metal refineries after destruction.

The results

Geocisa UK are happy with the Zero to Landfill service Shred Station provides for confidential WEEE waste.

We have been working with Shred Station for a long time. They were our first option due to their comprehensive waste management solutions, which align with our commitment to sustainability, data security, and operational efficiency. Their Zero to Landfill approach and ability to securely handle diverse WEEE waste simplify our processes while ensuring compliance and environmental responsibility.
